Growing up, one of the fondest memories was visiting the Chinese and Japanese Gardens with my family almost every weekend, cos it was and still is in our backyards. Those trips filled with moments of wonder, curiosity and a sense of peace that can only be found when you're surrounded by quiet whispers of nature. I remember walking through the majestic archways, climbing the iconic pagoda and being mesmerised by the vibrant colours of the pavilions, tea house, bondai garden and bridges that seemed to transport me another time and place.
As a child, Chinese Gardens felt like magic playground. The winding lakes, and carefully curated landscapes sparked my imagination. I would run freely, exploring every nook and cranny, unaware these moments were shaping my deep connection to nature. Back then, it was a place of play and adventure, it held a certain calmness that drew me in - a feeling of Coming Home
Years later, with the refurbishment of the Gardens, returning to it on 8 Sep 2024 felt like a full circle moment. Walking through the new, yet familiar surroundings, I was struck by how much has changed and yet how much has stayed the same. The Gardens have been lovingly restored with new features and modern touches yet the essence of what made them so special in my childhood.
As I wandered through, memories of my younger self came rushing back feeling a little emotional. It was as if the child in me was guiding my steps, showing me the magic of this place once again, but through a different lens. As an adult, I see them with deeper appreciation-for the history, the culture and tranquillity they bring.
Visiting the Chinese and Japanese Gardens felt like Coming Home to a place that has always been a part of me. Staying connected to our roots, to the places that shaped us and to the moments in nature that makes us Wonder and listen to the quiet Whisper. It will be a space where my inner child and my adult meet a sanctuary where I can pause, reflect and re-member the simple joys of life. Maybe these trees grew up together with me.
If you haven't been to the newly restored Chinese and Japanese Garden, I invite you to take a walk, slow down and maybe you'll find a bit of your own childhood wonder waiting for you.
